Andy Wong
Resident Choreographer
/ Dancer

Andy began his training at the age of 18 studying
Jazz and Chinese dance. In 1986, he entered The Hong Kong Academy for
Performing Arts, majored in Ballet. He choreographed for many organizations
and taught in the dance club of colleges and universities in Hong Kong.
He had also participated in new Choreography Showcase organized by The
Council of Hong Kong Dance Forum.
He received training in Southeast Asian Dance under Liu Chun Wai and
performed in Singapore in 1989. In June, he was awarded a scholarship
to participate in the American Dance Festival and further study for three
months in United States. He performed in John Wai Ling’s dance concert
in Singapore in the same year. In 1990, he toured to Korea for graduation
performance. He joined the Hong Kong Ballet and choreographed Dreams,
Star, Autumn, River of Love, and Love with Space for the company choreography
workshop.
He joined City Contemporary Dance Company (CCDC) in 1990 and danced major
roles in City Romance, Journey to the West, The Rite of Spring, Invisible
Cities and Three Dreams. He toured with the company to the northern China
and North America. His major works included Green Attire, The River Has
Its Tributary, Cold Wind Breaking and Einstein Fantasia for the CCDC;
Poem for Christian Dance Troupe and Rain Ghost for Chinese Dance Ensemble.
In 1991, he participated in the International SinoDance Week and introduced
his works Coldness and Larks of String.
Andy has produced such critically acclaimed programmes as The Trail of
Dreams for the Fringe Festival 1991, Cape of Hope and Solitary Transfiguration.
He co-founded DanceArt Hong Kong in 1993, co-produced and directing the
dance programmes Living in Peace, Circle of Colours and Some Dance Journals.
In 1994, he received a Stanley Ho Fellowship from the Asian Cultural Council
to explore modern dance and engage in cultural exchange activities in
United States.
He restructured DanceArt Hong Kong in 1995 and is now the Resident Choreographer of the company. In 1999, he received the Hong Kong Dance
Alliance Dance Award for his effort of dance education to special groups.
His choreographic works include: Dream Dreams, Shadow Box, Arrivals, Illumination,
Place Unknown, Sadness of a Man, Sonata, Rhythm of the Ocean, Wandering,
Passing, Telling the Story, Lovers (commissioned by the Estonian Theater),
The Good Woman of Szechwan (commissioned by Hong Kong Arts Festival 98’),
My Party, Just You and Me (All Independence Dance Series 99’), Sampling
Virus – Dreams, One Moment, Crossologue - Monologue: Light•Tunnel
(Millennium All Independent Dance Series), Paper Balloon, A Beautiful
Life, A Beautiful Life II and Smoke Factory.
